About the Book...

The Uncounted Irish breaks new ground in the history of Irish Emigration. Employing the methods of both genealogical and historical research, Dr. Fizgerald and Professor King challenge much that appears in textbooks on the subject of the Irish. Their thesis is that the Irish settled in rural America and Canada in much greater numbers and earlier than past historians have thought.

Readers may be surprised at the extent of Irish settlement in the original Thirteen Colonies, and in such states as Iowa, Wisconsin, Texas, and California. Many American readers will be surprised to learn of an Irish American invasion of Canada in the 1860's from American soil, a series of events ignored in American school textbooks. There are chapters on religious antagonism, the history of St. Patrick's Day celebrations, the role of Irish women in the labor movement in the 19th century, and much much more. Genealogists will be particularly pleased with the surname index.
